The "road to Hana" on Maui has reached legendary status over the years as a route that covers some of the nastiest "road" you'll find most anywhere. In reality, the road is actually very well maintained and is quite enjoyable... save for the constant cranking of the steering wheel back and forth as the road is nothing even resembling "straight." The road covers just a touch over 50 miles along the north shore of the island from Kahului to Hana, but it takes at least three hours to drive even if you don't stop at the myriad waterfalls, hiking trails and scenic overlooks. On our way out of Kahului we took a little diversion to the East Maui Animal Refuge, a non-profit rehabilitation sanctuary for injured and orphaned animals started by a couple who met after moving to Maui in the 1970s. We spent about an hour and a half touring the refuge and getting to know the animals before continuing along Hana Highway. Along the way to Hana we stopped off at various waterfalls, black sand beaches and such. We finally ended up at the Seven Sacred Pools in Haleakala National Park - a huge string of pools connected by waterfalls right along the ocean shore. Absolutely stunning place in the afternoon sun.
